E-News 1317 April 7th 2023 |
Welcome to a new E-News, Sad news this week. Ryuichi Sakamoto died on March 28 at the age of 71, he was one of Japan’s most internationally recognized musicians, celebrated as an electronic innovator, movie composer and sometime pop star. His soundtrack for “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” (1983) is fantastic and with Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) he had one of the greatest Electronic pop bands ever!! With the film “The Last Emperor,” in which he acted and also co-wrote the score (with David Byrne and Cong Su), he got a Grammy, Golden Globe and Academy Award!! And I need to mention his score for “The Revenant (2015 film)” I love that one. There is a great article about this master in the Japanese Times! (in English) https://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/2023/04/05/music/ryuichi-sakamoto-legacy/ It is a very good reflection of this great musician. —————————————————————————– First we start with a big thanks to you!! our costumers!! With a French “Retro One” synthesizer, which is similar in design to a Minimoog, Bertrand composes wonderful analogue sounds and sequences that are familiar from Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream. You dive back into the 70s and sometimes think you hear Edgar Froese sitting at the synthesizers or experience Moondawn (Schulze) anew. His 34 albums so far have mostly followed the principle of change, of finding new themes and concepts. Even if he has always remained true to his distinctive style, his music has accompanied a constant change and even almost 30 years after his first release, this approach is his proven way to inspire his fans and listeners. So there is no question that “GENESYS 23” as the current release, also brings some innovations and opens another “Something-New”-Chapter. Erbe’s narrative concept is possibly a novelty in the circle of the synthetically generated music genre and was or is probably rarely to be found (or to have been found) in this form. Perhaps Erbe has even created another milestone with it, because “GENESYS 23” has everything a perfect album needs. It contains an exciting theme, framed by 15 tracks that are catchy and very diversely produced. His music possesses those pioneer-based traditional elements of the current era and manages to straddle the line between commercial synth-pop numbers, contemporary traditional electronics and cinematic ambient. Erbe’s sound has stood for a modern form of patterns of earlier sequencer compositions for many years, blending it into his signature blend of beats, pads and elemental melodicism. But despite the different styles, all the pieces come together to form a whole, because above it all is the story that Erbe tells in the form of an “Electronical”. The futuresque imaginary journey of the android protagonist GENE is not entirely new, however. Already in 2017 Erbe had initiated the theme on the album “GENESYS” and provided a first idea basis. Its current continuation is thereby however clearly more complex and is available to the album consumers in several versions at once. The term “Electronical’s” is in this context his completely new designation. It exactly captures themeaning of the album’s narrative form. The narrative vocal bridges and linguistic additions are well-dosed and very selectively support the intention of the story. However, the album still leaves a lot of room for your own imaginary head cinema, as well as conclusions, hidden messages and also leaves open the final question of how GENE will decide. Ultimately, the question remains, how will we use artificial intelligence currently and in the future. Erbe’s idea of using AI systems in the production itself was of course no coincidence. Thus, both musical and visual tools have been used, which can be heard on the album, as well as will be seen at the concerts. Nevertheless, the music, stands above the many levels of expression of this story. The 15 pieces internalize with an extraordinary acoustic commonality their connection. It is in particular the many sound details, the sound selection and recurring compositional elements that run through the entire album as a common thread. In addition to an English and German language version, Erbe of course also releases a music-only variant, which serves as the main release. The two additional language versions serve as the basis for his concerts and are available as 30 (2×15 German & 2x 15 English) additional bonus tracks. However, the story about GENE is not yet told with the current release, because the continuation of the theme is already in the works. It will find its continuation in the form of further albums and concerts in 2023. But it is not yet quite sure which chapters will be written and when and where the journey will end. What is certain is that Erbe will change the music, add elements and create different versions. ———————————————————————————————– Jeff Greinke – A Thousand Year Flood https://www.groove.nl/shop/jeff-greinke-a-thousand-year-flood/?v=796834e7a283 Turning shadows into sonic emotional rivers, synthesist and composer Jeff Greinke’s A Thousand Year Flood skirts the edges where modern classical, electronic and ambient music converge. Working with cellist/violist Heather Bentley, Greinke’s first record for Projekt in 26 years is a hybrid of ambient chamber music and electroacoustic beauty. Throughout the near-hour-long set, atmosphere is critical to the impact as Greinke locates his paired-back minimalism within a setting of spaciousness and sensitivity. “A Thousand Year Flood,” Greinke explains, “represents further explorations in composing electroacoustic music which I began over a decade ago. This time rather than working with an ensemble I focus on one instrumentalist – cellist/violist Heather Bentley. It became clear early on in the process that Heather’s understanding of my approach, sound, and sensibilities had deepened since we began working together in 2019 for the album Other Weather. Whether working with scored parts, improvising under my direction, or freely exploring her own ideas over my sketched out sections, Heather’s thoughtful expressions fit seamlessly within my own. Heather’s voice is unique, lending a more expansive breadth of harmonic richness and emotional body to these compositions.” “I am greatly fascinated by the mixing of synthetic and acoustic sounds, sometimes blurring them to create an hybrid of timbres and textures as evidenced in the title track, ‘The Forest,’ and ‘Upon a River that Still Flows,’ whereas other times keeping them very distinct yet cohesive as in ‘Earth and Sky.’” “Although in the last four-plus decades my work has veered in a few different directions, the exploration of raw sound itself and the treating and layering of such sounds to create complex and interesting textures, moods and atmospheres, has always been my primary focus. With A Thousand Year Flood, there’s a richness and evocativeness I achieve by utilizing less sonic material, paring back the amount of instrumental layering which is something I’ve strived towards for a long time. It’s a pleasure hearing it come together like this. It’s quite rewarding and exciting!” On his 23rd release, Jeff Greinke realizes an engaging balance between consonance and dissonance, timbre and shade, ambience and aura. His impressionistic ambient chamber music shimmers in the passing light of melodic stringed textures and shifting electronic shadow. A short list!!
