Steve Brereton / UK –
In the same vein as Vangelis‘ ‘Invisible Connections’, this is one of the very few albums who’s title and cover alone gives you a pretty good idea of what might just come through the speakers.
For far too long, I’d dismissed the UK synth movement as a pale shadow of their German contemporaries. Mark Shreeve‘s early work (and his work with Ian Boddy) being the only saving grace.
Just goes to show, doesn’t it! The opening phrases of ‘Accretion’ and ‘Perambulator’ alone blow me away. I’ve listened to this album pretty much every day since first hearing it about three weeks back (Oct 05), and it grabs and shakes me each time.Whilst I’m still trying to understand most of it, the utter absence of drum machines and the commanding presence of the moire-like sequences and metallic tones, alongside Boddy‘s modular, makes this compelling listening.
